Caring for our carers

National Carers Week from 15 to 21 October 2023 is a celebration of carers and an opportunity to recognise, celebrate and raise community awareness of the important role carers play in our community.

According to the latest (2021) ABS Census, in the City of Stonnington, 10,840 carers provide unpaid assistance to a person with a disability, long-term illness, is frail or aged. This represents 11.7 per cent of the population aged 15 years and over.

To show our appreciation of the contribution carers make to our community and give something back, this year we have teamed up with local art hub Duldig Studio for free guided tour events on 18 and 20 October.

We encourage carers to take a break from caring as we welcome them to small group (15 people only) guided tours of the studio.

The tours, which include traditional Viennese cake and tea, give carers the opportunity to feel valued and connect with other carers in a relaxed environment.

Background

About 2.65 million Australians provide unpaid care and support to family members and friends who have a disability, mental health condition, chronic condition, terminal illness, an alcohol or other drug issue or who are frail or aged. Anyone can become a carer, at any time.

Carers Week is an opportunity to raise community awareness among all Australians about the diversity of carers and their caring roles. It is a time to recognise, celebrate and raise awareness about the 2.65 million Australians who provide care and support to a family member or friend.

National Carers Week is an initiative of Carers Australia, funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services, and coordinated with the assistance and participation of the National Carer Network.

City of Stonnington has a long history of collaborating with local organisations to support members of our community including carers through hosting special events and activities.

Our support for carers in our community and recognition of Carers Week aligns with our Health and Wellbeing Plan 2021–25, and

Council Plan 2021–25: An inclusive and healthy community

2.2 Diverse, inclusive, and safe

Duldig Studio

The Duldig family home was opened as a museum in 1996.

In 2002, the association, The Duldig Gallery was incorporated as a public museum and art gallery to operate the Duldig Studio. It is a tax-exempt charity and recognised as a deductible gift recipient institution under the Commonwealth Government’s Cultural Gifts Program. At this time a gallery space was added to the original house so that changing exhibitions could be mounted. Within the house several rooms are maintained as they were during the family’s residence. Karl’s original studio, with kiln, tools and work across all periods has been kept as it was left by the artist, and in the adjoining garden the bronze and terracotta sculptures also remain in situ.
