Carnarvon basketball initiative to assist community players achieve their goals

  • Basketball WA to deliver the program in partnership with key Carnarvon community organisations including PCYC and Stephen Michael Foundation
  • $20,000 initiative to focus on children, youth and seniors
  • The State Government has committed to providing Basketball WA with $20,000 to co-ordinate and deliver a community basketball program in the Shire of Carnarvon.

    Announcing the initiative in Carnarvon, Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray said the project will stimulate participation and leadership in basketball, particularly for young people, and create long-term opportunities.

    Basketball WA will implement the program as part of a working group that includes WA Police and Community Youth Centres (PCYC) and the Stephen Michael Foundation.

    The working group will also include:

    • Aboriginal Biodiversity Conservation (ABC) Foundation Ltd;
    • Ngala Mid West Gascoyne;
    • Shire of Carnarvon; and
    • Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.

    The working group will devise a basketball program that will target the following groups:

    • Children – via Aussie Hoops program and engagement;
    • Youth – via Night Hoops, 3on3 games and community engagement activities; and
    • Senior – via 3on3 competition and activities.

    As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray:

    “I’m pleased to be able to help the Carnarvon Basketball Program get going.

    “The local community has identified a need to have access to regular sport and active recreation activities for young people.

    “The Carnarvon PCYC exists so that young people at risk in the Carnarvon area have a safe place to go.

    “The State Government has already committed $1.05 million towards redeveloping PCYC’s new premises at the Carnarvon Community Recreation Centre.

    “This basketball project will be especially beneficial as we get more young people – and people of all age groups – engaging in community sport and active recreation coming off the COVID 19 shutdown.”

    As stated by Mining and Pastoral Region MLC Kyle McGinn:

    “It’s great to see this investment in the community in Carnarvon, and in particular the young people.

    “Having great sports and recreation programs can make a huge impact on a young person’s life.

    “We never know who will be the next champion Australian basketballer – maybe a young kid from Carnarvon!”
