Casey welcomes funding commitment for local parks

The City of Casey welcomes the $2.5 million funding commitment from the Albanese Labor Government for local park and playground upgrades.

The announcement was made on Friday by Member for Bruce Julian Hill MP and the Shadow Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, the Hon. Catherine King, who met with City of Casey CEO Glenn Patterson at a local playground.

City of Casey Chair of Administrators Noelene Duff PSM said Council was pleased to support this commitment with a $1 million contribution to complete a $3.5 million package.

“Our community has told us that investing in green spaces and recreation activities is important to them,” Ms Duff said.

“This package of upgrades will further enhance our beautiful outdoor spaces and provide children and their families with even better places to play, connect and explore, close to home.”

Ms Duff said the City of Casey was home to one of the highest populations of young people in the state.

“Children aged 0-4 years make up the largest cohort of Casey’s population, with 31,800 in this age group in 2021, and children aged 5-9 years are set to become the largest population group by 2041.

“It makes sense to plan for the growth of this demographic so they have access to the services and infrastructure that will help them thrive.”

More than 10 local parks would be upgraded under the funding package in suburbs including Berwick, Doveton, Endeavour Hills, Hallam, Lysterfield South, Narre Warren, Narre Warren South and Narre Warren North.

“We look forward to working with Julian Hill MP and the Shadow Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, the Hon. Catherine King, to improve these outdoor spaces.”

Ms Duff said Council was also working with the State and Federal governments on the implementation of our new advocacy campaign Connecting Casey, which is based on community feedback.

“Our community has told us that they consider major rail and transport upgrades as the most important for the State and Federal governments to invest in, followed by local job opportunities, health services and facilities and other infrastructure.”

In the lead up to the Federal Election, Connecting Casey will be calling for a range of projects and services, including:

  • Clyde Rail Link, the long-awaited metro rail line extension from Cranbourne to Clyde.
  • Clyde Road Corridor, the most congested north-south connection in the city and one of the most dangerous.
  • Thompsons Road upgrade and extension, which will serve the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire (home to almost 500,000) and unlock a regional employment precinct of up to 100,000 jobs and create an alternate route to the Monash Freeway.
  • A new Headspace satellite centre for our growing suburbs.
  • 100 gigabit fibre connection to commercial precincts in the city as well as increased mobile towers and 5G deployment in new estates to reduce mobile blackspots in the city.
  • Continued investment in a range of local community infrastructure and critical services to ensure our growing communities have access to these services and facilities close to home.
