CBA joins global digital preservation foundation

Marking World Digital Preservation Day, CBA is the first corporate in Australia to be joining the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC).

The DPC is a not-for-profit that advances the cause of digital preservation and upskills archivists in digital archiving through cutting edge technology from digital files to AI.

“The Commonwealth Bank of Australia Group Archives is a leader in digital preservation within the Australian financial sector,” says Jeff Palmer, Manager, Group Archives for the bank.

“The DPC offers us a rich range of unique workshops, conferences and professional collaborations. We look forward to advancing the cause of digital preservation within Australia and ensuring our collective digital memory remains safe, secure and accessible for decades to come.”

The DPC’s Head, Australasia and Asia-Pacific Robin Wright welcomed the Commonwealth Bank of Australia Group Archives to the Coalition, saying: “It is very exciting to have the CBA Group Archives as a new member of our local DPC community in Australasia and Asia-Pacific.

“Their expertise with the long-term preservation of commercial digital material will help us to engage with many of the challenges faced by Australasian businesses around digital preservation.”

CBA is the custodians of over four million legacy digital items dating back many decades that record and preserve the ongoing evolution of the Commonwealth Bank and Australia’s financial system.

The DPC is an international charitable foundation which supports digital preservation, helping its members around the world to deliver resilient long-term access to digital content and services through community engagement, targeted advocacy work, training and workforce development, capacity building, good practice and standards, and through good management and governance. Its vision is a secure digital legacy.

CBA recently opened a brand-new purpose-built archive, The Vault, and Sir Denison Miller reading room at the bank’s newest campus in Sydney which houses and protects important artefacts of the bank’s history.
