Central Coast man charged after firing shotgun at ducks in residential area, NSW

A Central Coast man has faced court today charged with firearms offences after allegedly shooting at ducks in his backyard pool.

About 8pm yesterday (Wednesday 24 July 2019), officers from Brisbane Water Police District were contacted after a resident in Rata Place, Kariong, located holes in windows and shotgun pellets in the rear of their home.

Following inquiries, police established a shot was fired about 2.30pm from a nearby backyard.

Police attended a home on Jarrah Drive and spoke to the 72-year-old male resident.

Further inquiries revealed the man did not hold a firearms licence and was in possession of an unregistered shotgun, which he purchased more than 20 years ago.

Police seized the firearm and ammunition, and the man was arrested and taken to Gosford Police Station.

The man was subsequently charged with fire firearm likely to injure persons/damage property, possess unregistered firearm, not keep firearm safely, and possess ammunition without holding a licence.

Police will allege in court that the man fired one shot from an unregistered firearm in an attempt to disperse a paddling of ducks, which were in his backyard pool.

He was refused bail to appear at Gosford Local Court today (Wednesday 24 July 2019).
