The City of Perth has confirmed it will continue to host New Year’s Eve activities in Northbridge on Friday evening.
However, the line-up of events has changed to meet current COVID-19 restrictions.
Family-friendly entertainment such as roving street performers, circus acts, Northbridge Piazza movies, Festive Land, comedy routines and fireworks will still take place on the night, along with the Twilight Hawkers Market at Forrest Place. However, musical acts have been cancelled.
City of Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said the City had worked with the relevant authorities to ensure New Year’s Eve activities were in line with the COVID-19 restrictions.
“We’ve been in discussions with the Department of Health over the past few days and removed the music performances planned for Yagan Square to ensure people comply with the no dancing rule,” he said.
“All other aspects of the celebrations will go ahead as planned, including the fireworks at 9pm and midnight.”
The Lord Mayor said anyone planning to head into Northbridge should wear a mask and stay home if they are unwell or have been unwell in the past 14 days.
“Several COVID-safe measures will be implemented to ensure a safe event for all including hand sanitiser stations and QR codes around the event site so people can use their SafeWA app at each location,” he said.

People can also find a vantage point near the Swan River to catch traditional New Year’s Eve fireworks at Gloucester Park or Crown.
Getting there
To facilitate New Year’s Eve events in the city and ensure public safety, City of Perth has approved the following temporary road closures on Friday 31 December until Saturday 1 January:
31 December 2021, From 4pm
- William St (horse-shoe bridge), between Wellington St and Roe St
- William St, between Roe St and Francis St
- Roe St, between Nicks Lane and William St
- James St, between Parker St and James St cul-de-sac
- Lake St, between Roe St and Francis St
The City of Perth reminds patrons that there will be no vehicle access to the restricted area once roads have been closed. Parking restrictions will be in place, infringements and towing may apply. Check street signage for time restrictions.
It is anticipated that closed roads will reopen by 5am on Saturday 1 January 2022.
People are encouraged to plan their journey, take note of road closures and carpark locations and take advantage of taxis and public transport.
The closest train station can be found at Perth Train Station, Wellington Street, while the closest bus stops are at Perth Busport (Yagan Square).
Please be aware that due to METRONET’s Thornlie-Cockburn Link project, there will be no scheduled trains running on the Mandurah line during this event.
