City Hall lights up for Christmas

After months of preparation Toowoomba’s iconic City Hall is set to be transformed into the spirit of Christmas with the lighting up of thousands of Christmas lights of Thursday 18 November.

Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) Environment and Community Committee Chair Cr James O’Shea said after a difficult two years, the festive spirit was well and truly here with Council thrilled to be involved in the CBD’s Christmas celebrations, giving everyone something to enjoy this Christmas season.

“Last year we were unable to hold an official lighting of City Hall due to COVID, so it’s great to have the celebration back again this year,” Cr O’Shea said.

“I encourage as many people as possible to come down to the CBD to enjoy the event. Festivities will start at 6pm with children’s activities on offer. There will also be carollers, singing our favourite Christmas songs.

“The lighting of City Hall will take place just after 7pm, with the Santa Street Parade commencing shortly after that.”

The Santa Street Parade will proceed from City Hall down Ruthven Street, turning left into Margaret Street and heading to Central Square, outside Grand Central.

Once the procession arrives at Central Square, the Mayor will light the Christmas tree.

TRC Mayor Paul Antonio said this was a special time of year to rejoice and celebrate blessings and good fortune with loved ones.

“Regardless of the challenges of the past year or the challenges that lie ahead, it’s worth looking forward in hope and optimism.

“I encourage you to make the most of the season of goodwill by supporting our Region’s businesses- that way we can all share in some festive cheer.

“This is an ideal opportunity to stroll and wander the street and laneways in Toowoomba’s CBD, check out the huge Christmas tree, decorated shop windows and displays, enjoy the entertainment and support local businesses.”
