City supports ballet for masses

Community groups that help people experiencing disadvantage and encourage school students to be introduced to the arts, will benefit from financial support by the City of Perth.

Each year as a part of West Australian Ballet’s Access Program, the company opens the final Dress Rehearsal of each of their five mainstage seasons in Perth, and provides complimentary tickets for community organisations.

It also runs multiple performances specifically for schools that embed the arts into education.

Chair Commissioner Andrew Hammond said the City recognises the important role arts and culture play within the wider community, and this program ensures more people can enjoy the theatre.

“The City is happy to support this worthy cause, and West Australian Ballet should be commended for providing access to arts experiences for people who may not otherwise be able to attend,” Chair Commissioner Hammond said.

“The City’s $25,000 sponsorship will support our State Ballet Company in being able to provide complimentary tickets to people experiencing hardship, and subsidise tickets to children – many of whom will experience the arts for the first time.”

Executive Director of West Australian Ballet, Jessica Machin, said support from the City of Perth for this type of engagement helps to increase opportunities for the community to participate in cultural life, and to deliver arts activity that celebrate Perth’s cultural identity.

“With this support students and people who are experiencing tough times are welcomed and valued, providing access for them to be inspired by the arts,” said Ms Machin.

“I hope this partnership will continue, as we look to make Perth flourish.”
