City to commence annual tree planting program 27 April

The City of Greater Bendigo will commence planting approximately 1,600 advanced trees throughout the municipality from Monday May 4, 2020.

City of Greater Bendigo Parks and Open Space Manager Paul Gangell said the City was committed to improving the liveability of Bendigo’s urban areas and townships through its annual advanced tree planting program.

“Providing natural shade to our Kindergartens and Early Learning Centres is a focus of this year’s program as well as providing much needed shade to some of Bendigo’s most vulnerable areas to extreme heat,” Mr Gangell said.

“Urban trees not only enhance the appearance of our City and its streetscapes but are essential to creating a liveable community. They provide shade and cool urban areas, support physical and mental wellbeing and improve our natural environment.”

“The advanced trees are over 1.5 metres tall and include a mix of native and exotic species. All trees are carefully selected by the City’s public space team to ensure the most appropriate species for a location is planted, based on local conditions, climate, neighbourhood character and any relevant master plans.

“The City is responsible for all ongoing maintenance of the trees including watering them for the first two years. This year’s program has been put together from resident requests and from suggestions received through the City’s recent Greening Greater Bendigo community engagement. All new requests for new street trees will now be considered for our 2021 program.

“While the City waters and maintain all new trees for the first two summers residents are encouraged to assist by giving the trees an additional drink, especially over the hotter summer months so they receive the best possible start.”

Tree planting will take place in Jackass Flat, Strathdale, California Gully, Long Gully, Kangaroo Flat, Maiden Gully, Epsom, Golden Square, Eaglehawk, North Bendigo, Ascot and at various early years centres and kindergartens.
