Community invested in future of cycling in Wollongong

If you have thoughts on cycling in Wollongong now is the time to share them with consultation on the draft Wollongong Cycling Strategy 2030 wrapping up on Monday 17 August.

To date, there have been more than 900 comments marked on the interactive online map that identifies our community’s current experience of across the city.

Acting Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Tania Brown said that there was still a couple of days left to submit feedback on the draft Wollongong Cycling Strategy 2030.

“It’s fantastic to see how engaged our community is when it comes to improving the cycling networks across Wollongong. Cycling is an important issue for many of us especially as more and more residents are making healthier transport choices,” she said.

“The draft Wollongong Cycling Strategy 2030 is a strategic document that aims to increase bike riding participation at all levels of ability. Cycling is not only a good form of exercise but also has ongoing benefits for our broader community and can improve our environment, tourism opportunities, transport systems and economy.”

“Your feedback on the strategy is an important part of Council’s process and will directly inform how we roll out changes and upgrades across our communities.”

Once the Wollongong Cycling Strategy 2030 is endorsed an implementation plan will be developed that will guide how Council takes action to improve cycling.

“While this Strategy is key to providing a focus and direction, we’re already taking steps to support improved cycling experiences for people of all abilities,” Cr Brown said.

“Just as we’re seeking community feedback on this document, we’re also asking residents for comments about a project looking at new cycling routes in key locations in the Wollongong CBD, Port Kembla, Towradgi and Thirroul. These changes will include upgrades such as new cycleways, safer on-road cycling and shared pathways.

“Information about this pilot program is also available on Council’s dedicated engagement platform available on our website.”

Submissions for feedback on the draft Wollongong Cycling Strategy 2030 close Monday 17 August 2020.
