The City of Greater Bendigo is inviting residents to comment on a project to enhance the Long Gully Creek through the installation of constructed wetlands to help filter and clean stormwater before it enters the creek by Friday July 10, 2020.
City of Greater Bendigo Presentation and Assets Director Debbie Wood said the proposed wetlands would consist of a series of shallow ponds planted with native vegetation to improve the amenity of the local area, clean stormwater and create habitat for frogs and birds.
“The wetlands would also create cool urban refuges and build connections between people and nature and provide benefits to improve the liveability of urban Bendigo,” Ms Wood said.
“The wetlands would be developed near Webdon St, North Bendigo and will form a demonstration project as part of the Reimagining Bendigo Creek project which aims to improve the health of creeks across Bendigo.
“The City is starting along Long Gully Creek as it was identified as a high priority location to achieve better stormwater outcomes. The chosen site will also have the added benefit of improving public space in Northern Bendigo.
“The wetlands are currently under design and the City is now seeking community input into the project and would like to hear the community’s views or concerns about the proposal.”
The City is working in partnership with the Dja Dja Wurrung and North Central Catchment Management Authority to progress the project. The project is jointly funded by the City and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.
