A project that will help to ease the congestion on some of Caloundra’s main roads is now open to motorists, providing better connectivity to the communities of Golden Beach and Pelican Waters.
The extension of Burke St to Pelican Waters Blvd gives the area a new east-west connection and is expected to cater for more than 7000 vehicles per day by 2031.
The project is also forecast to reduce traffic volumes on sections of busy Caloundra Rd by around 4000 vehicles per day by 2031.
It is a key element of Sunshine Coast Council and the Queensland Government’s plans to improve traffic flow and access to the Caloundra and Golden Beach areas.
Division 2 Councillor Tim Dwyer said the Burke St extension was a significant council project that would improve travel for Caloundra residents and visitors.
“It’s great to see vehicles on this road, ahead of schedule,” Cr Dwyer said,
“This is essentially a new road between Pelican Waters Blvd and Golden Beach, and importantly it will reduce vehicle queuing and improve traffic flow on busy Caloundra Rd.
“It will redistribute traffic from Caloundra Rd, east of Nicklin Way, onto Pelican Waters Blvd, and should assist in making it quicker for motorists to travel through the existing roundabout at Caloundra Rd/Nicklin Way/Pelican Waters Blvd
“The Burke St extension is the result of council’s extensive technical analysis, traffic modelling and forward planning – and it is only part of the overall road network solution for Caloundra, which also requires upgrades to State Government roads and roundabouts.
“Other local roads are part of the improvements including an extension of Arthur St, Queen St off-ramps and State roads – all being elements in the proposed traffic network.
“This project is part of a bigger solution that needs to be achieved.
“As other new elements of the road network are brought to fruition the benefit from the use of Burke St will be fully realised.”
The project included a new sealed carpark for the Caloundra District Indoor Bowls Association facility at Burke St.
