The Mornington Peninsula Shire has begun work on the new Hastings Seniors’ Learning Hub, which will be dedicated to supporting older people to remain healthy, active and independent.

The upgraded facility will be home to the Hastings Senior Citizens Club and new tenant Hastings U3A. Total project cost is $1.4 million which will deliver an accessible, modern and functional facility including internal renovations of the kitchen and bathrooms, an extension with new open plan offices, waiting room and reception plus a new computer room and billiards room.

Shire Mayor Sam Hearn said the new Seniors’ Learning Hub is an important piece of Council’s Positive Ageing Strategy and underlines its commitment to ensuring the needs, aspirations and wellbeing of older community members are considered and met.

“With more than 30 per cent of our residents aged over 60 years-old, it is important that we increase opportunities for older people to continue to contribute to their community and ensure that they maintain strong social connections as they age.

“The new Hastings Seniors’ Learning Hub will provide educational and recreational services and programs which will support older people in remaining active, healthy and happy.”

Cerberus ward Councillor Kate Roper said the facility, which is due to be complete in July 2020, will ultimately benefit all of the community.

“An inclusive community is a strong community. Making our older citizens feel valued and supported will strengthen us all.

“I am thrilled that we will have a facility that will bring together people to collaborate, learn, socialise and continue to engage with all our community has to offer.”

The construction is funded by the Mornington Peninsula Shire and the Victorian government’s Growing Suburbs Fund.
