Continuing to implement recommendations of Royal Commission

Elise Archer, Attorney General

The Tasmanian Government’s Fifth Annual Progress Report and Action Plan 2023, responding to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse has today been released.

The Annual Report outlines the Tasmanian Government’s important ongoing work to implement the recommendations of the Royal Commission and our continuing commitment to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our children and young people.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Elise Archer said the report confirms the significant work done across the past 12 months.

“There is nothing more important than ensuring the safety of our children and young people, and there has been significant progress made over the past year,” the Attorney-General said.

“This year has seen the Child and Youth Safe Organisations Bill 2022 tabled in Parliament, which will establish the legislative basis for the Child and Youth Safe Organisations Framework.

“This will require all organisations that work with children and young people to take specific steps to keep them safe and respond effectively where incidents of harm do occur.

“Our Government is also progressing legislative amendments relating to the prosecution of sexual offences, providing better access to justice for victims and survivors.”

While this Report represents the fifth and final report under the recommendations of the Royal Commission, options will be explored to continue annual reporting following the release of the Commission of Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government’s Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings.

The Government acknowledges that the work of the Royal Commission and the Tasmanian Government’s response may be distressing to some people in our community, and if at any time anyone feels that they would like to speak with someone, there are services and support groups available to help.

Some options for advice and support include:

  • 1800 Respect;
  • Lifeline on 13 11 14;
  • Sexual Assault Support Service (SASS) on 1800 697 877;
