- China is WA’s largest agrifood and beverage export market
The Cook Government has welcomed China’s decision to remove the 80.5 per cent anti-dumping and countervailing duties imposed on Australian barley in 2020.
The decision paves the way for Western Australian barley exporters to re-enter the Chinese market.
Prior to the suspension in 2019-20, China was WA’s largest market for barley exports, purchasing 53 per cent of the State’s production, valued at $409 million.
Since then, the State Government has continued to support business engagement with China, while also encouraging market diversification efforts for long term benefit to our economy.
China is Western Australia’s largest agrifood and beverage export market, representing about 17 per cent of the State’s agrifood and beverage exports in 2021-22.
As stated by Agriculture and Food Minister Jackie Jarvis:
“This is great news and I look forward to the resumption of the barley trade with China and the reinvigoration of this important relationship.
“WA malting barley has always had a strong reputation and is desired in China for its high-quality characteristics.
“I want to congratulate the Federal Government in its successful efforts working with Chinese authorities to secure the lifting of the barley tariff.
“Our Government continues to work closely with Australian Government trade delegates and in market activations to secure opportunities for WA agriculture exports.”
