Canberra’s newest community centre opens today in the Molonglo Valley, providing a space for local groups and residents to gather as the community grows.
Located at the Molonglo Health Hub in Coombs, the new centre has been established to host a diverse range of community groups, from parents’ groups, yoga classes, corporate functions, training sessions, celebratory events and general meetings.
“Having places for people come together is an important for new and growing communities like Molonglo to build a sense of community,” Special Minister of State Chris Steel said.
“This facility provides 300m2 of privately owned space at the Coombs Community Activity Centre on Woodberry Ave for use by the community, including recreational, educational, artistic, social or cultural activities.”
“Molonglo locals asked for a place to meet and host events as more people come to call this region home, and the Government has listened.”
“This new space is just one of several community facilities that will be delivered in the Molonglo Valley over the next few years, with permanent community centres planned as part of the Coombs and Wright Village and another Community Centre and Library planned in the Molonglo Commercial Centre.”
The facility joins existing community facilities in the Molonglo Valley at Denman Community Centre, Evelyn Scott School and Charles Weston School which can also be booked for community events.
The Coombs Community Centre is fully furnished, with modern amenities and features. It has a meeting room that can hold up to 100 people, technology for audio-visual presentations, kitchenette facilities and bathrooms.
The YWCA has been selected to manage the hiring of the Coombs Community Centre, after an expression of interest process conducted by ACT Government.
Booking for Coombs community centre will be available soon for interested groups – via the YWCA.
