Townsville City Council crews continue to work around the clock to repair infrastructure damaged by the unprecedented monsoon.
Townsville Local Recovery and Resilience Group Chair Deputy Mayor Les Walker said Council crews have identified more than 2000 initial repairs and the works are in progress to restore our road network as part of the recovery effort.
“Council maintains more than 1700km of sealed road and 80 per cent of that infrastructure has been assessed for damage,” Cr Walker said.
“Initial repairs to more than 600 electrical, mechanical and pipe assets have been completed.
“Assessments to about 400 parks have been done, with more than 8000 individual items – such as fencing and playground equipment – examined for damage.”
Infrastructure Committee Chairman Cr Mark Molachino said Council crews were continuing to assess and repair damage across the community.
“The unprecedented monsoon caused significant damage right across our community,” Cr Molachino said.
“Council crews have been working around the clock to do everything from removing mud and silt off pathways to repairing potholes and fixing damage parks.
“I’d like to thank the community for their patience during the recovery and remind residents that some further repair works will continue for several months.”
Townsville Water and Waste Committee Chair Cr Russ Cook said Council crews put in a phenomenal effort to keep the city’s water network working throughout the unprecedented monsoon.
“Throughout the monsoon our team members were working at all hours to fix water treatment plants and burst pipes to ensure residents had water available from their taps,” Cr Cook said.
“Initial repairs have been done but there are still pieces of infrastructure that require further works.”
