Council successfully obtains funding for road safety

Mornington Peninsula Shire successfully obtained over $72,000 through the Transport Accident Commission’s (TAC) Community Road Safety Grants and Local Government Grant for Small Scale Infrastructure.
Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor David Gill said this is great news for the Peninsula and thanked the TAC for supporting Council.
“These grants, in addition to the funding already contributed by the Shire, will help improve and strengthen our road network to ensure we are providing safer roads for our community”.
Wildlife Electronic Signage
TAC contribution through Community Road Safety Grants: $30,000
Council contribution: $10,000
The purpose of the project is to inform road users of wildlife risks associated with Peninsula rural roads and encourage safer driver behaviour.
The Shire will use the funding to install variable message signs (VMS) in multiple locations on rural roads that have been identified with higher incidents of animals on the road.
Council will work with the Australian Wildlife Protection Council to relocate the signs between priority roads on an ongoing basis.
The Shire will be collecting traffic data during the project to determine the effectiveness of signs.
Road Safety Strategy
TAC contribution through Community Road Safety Grants: $30,000
In 2016, Mornington Peninsula Shire adopted the TAC’s Towards Zero Municipality Initiative.
This funding will contribute to developing a new Road Safety Strategy that will replace the Shire’s DriveSafe Strategy and will set out the actions and a clear direction for the Shire’s approach to road safety over the next five years
The Strategy will contribute towards Council’s goal of being a Towards Zero municipality – to create a safe road system including safer roads and roadsides, safer speeds, safer vehicles and safer road users.
Shared path signage improvements
TAC contribution through Local Government Grant for Small Scale Infrastructure: $12,500
Council contribution: $12,500
The purpose of the project is to formalise safe multi-use paths on over 40km of the shared path network and will significantly improve cycling connectivity for the community.
The funding will allow the Shire to install 65 shared path signs along selected existing footpaths across the Shire to improve safety and connectivity for cyclists.
