Councils Agree to Continue to Share Services: Bayside

Bayside Council Mayor Joe Awada and Georges River Council Mayor Kevin Greene met in Kingsgrove this week to discuss the joint tender for waste collection and the possibility of future collaboration.

Both Councils discussed the benefits and challenges associated with joint tendering at their respective March Council meetings and concluded that there are significant benefits to sharing resources and costs.

“Joint contracts were in place prior to amalgamation. It was a successful arrangement and this continued cooperation between our Councils will bring significant benefits as resources and costs are shared,” Bayside Mayor Joe Awada said.

“We have already seen how collaborating and working together provides greater benefits for all our residents. Continuing this arrangement will ensure quality waste removal services and savings,” said Georges River Mayor Kevin Greene.

Bayside and Georges River will now continue their collaboration by entering into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly tender for the relevant provision of waste collection services.

The joint tender will test the competitive market with each council being responsible for managing their individual service requirements.

Bayside Council and Georges River Council will have to, either separately or jointly, tender and secure waste collection services by the end of February 2023 when the current joint waste collection contracts expire.

The new contract will be similar to the existing joint collections contract, started in 2008 and due to expire in 2023, that was shared by the former Rockdale, Kogarah and Hurstville Councils.

The councils have allowed for a two-year timeline for this joint initiative as recommended by the NSW EPA model collection contract tendering guidelines.
