Couple charged after baby injured during alleged domestic violence incident, NSW

A couple has been charged after their son was injured while they were allegedly physically fighting in the Murrumbidgee region earlier this week.

About 9pm on Wednesday (6 February 2019), officers from Murrumbidgee Police District responded to reports of a physical fight on a residential street at Leeton.

On arrival, police spoke with a 32-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman, and a number of witnesses.

The man was subsequently arrested and taken to Leeton Police Station.

As a matter of course, responding police requested assistance from NSW Ambulance Service.

Paramedics examined an eight-month-old boy, who was lethargic and non-responsive, before taking him to Griffith Base Hospital for further treatment. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad attended the hospital and commenced an investigation.

As a result of inquiries, the 32-year-old man was charged with affray, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and take action that results in physical injury.

He was refused bail and appeared at Leeton Local Court yesterday (Thursday 7 February 2019), where he was granted strict conditional bail to re-appear at the same court next Tuesday (12 February 2019).

Following further inquiries, detectives arrested a 24-year-old woman at Griffith Police Station, where she was charged with affray, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and take action that results in physical injury.

The woman was refused bail to appear at Griffith Local Court today (Friday 8 February 2019).

The Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad is comprised of detectives who are specially trained to investigate matters against children and adults, including sexual assault, serious physical abuse, and extreme cases of neglect.
