A critical incident investigation has been declared after a rider died following a police pursuit in the state’s south today.
About 3.35pm today (Sunday 6 October 2024), police were patrolling the Jamberoo area when they attempted to stop a motorcycle rider for a random breath test.
Officers attached to Lake Illawarra Police District directed the rider to stop; however, when he allegedly failed to do so a pursuit was initiated.
The pursuit was then terminated a short later due to safety concerns.
A short time after the pursuit was terminated police located the crashed motorcycle on Jamberoo Road.
Police immediately commenced first aid on the rider before NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived; however, he died at the scene.
He is yet to be formally identified.
A critical incident team from Wollongong Police District will investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The investigation is also subject to an independent review.
