Delivering Better Services as Parliament Resumes

NT Government

The Territory Labor Government is this week set to introduce a raft of legislation and deliver for Territorians.

The Territory Government will pass the Liquor Legislation Amendment Bill, which includes minor technical amendments arising from a review of the Liquor Act. This will ensure the Bill acts as intended and remains as workable as possible for Territorians.

We have acted on the Riley Review with 189 recommendations implemented and 29 ongoing.

Measures we have introduced include the Banned Drinker Register, Minimum Unit Price and establishing the Independent Liquor Commission.

The Territory Government will also pass the Environment Legislation Amendment Bill which is designed to amend a range of laws to better protect the environment.

The Government will also introduce the Termination of Pregnancy Law Reform Amendment Bill, following on from when the reforms were first introduced four years ago. This Bill will bring the Territory’s termination of pregnancy laws more in line with other jurisdictions and delivers better access to safe reproductive healthcare for women.

Meanwhile, the Territory Government will introduce key legislation to better protect children, improve access to healthcare and pave the way to build a tourist and government services hub for Kakadu and the West Arnhem region.

The Government will introduce the Medicines, Poisons and Therapeutic Goods Amendment Bill.

This will allow for a Real Time Prescription Monitoring system to be established and ensure prescribers and pharmacists have a complete and accurate history of their patients medicine supply.

Furthermore, the Jabiru Town Development Repeal Bill will deliver clearer powers relating to the management of essential services in Jabiru and support the creation of a tourist and government services hub.

Quotes from Leader of Government Business Natasha Fyles:

“The Territory Labor Government’s sharp focus over this parliamentary sitting week is to deliver more jobs, better healthcare and more support for Territory children.

“No Government has done more to reform alcohol policy in the Territory and this week we will pass legislation to support our plan to further address alcohol-related harm.”
