City of Parramatta Council is one step closer to the construction of 5 Parramatta Square, the City’s new civic, cultural and community building, after it received endorsement from the Council to lodge a Development Application (DA) for the building.
The multipurpose building, which is the final addition to the new Parramatta Square precinct, is a space dedicated to the community, housing a public library; places for people to meet, work, play and study; a café; publicly available meeting rooms; and access to nearby transport.
“I’m delighted to see Council’s long-term vision for one of Australia’s largest urban regeneration projects progressing and I look forward to watching 5 Parramatta Square go from concept to reality,” City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Andrew Wilson said.
Designed by a consortium of French firm Manuelle Gautrand Architecture and Australian firms DesignInc and Lacoste + Stevenson following an international design competition, 5 Parramatta Square will be a contemporary piece of innovative sustainable architecture, featuring an open, flexible layout and tessellated facade.
“This new civic building will be the beating heart of Parramatta – a unique space where the community can work, study and relax. The striking design and incredible functionality of 5 Parramatta Square will undoubtedly create an iconic presence within the City,” Cr Wilson said.
“City of Parramatta Council is leading the way by delivering a first-class sustainable building that will be a true asset to the community well into the future.”
An information service on the ground floor will provide people with access to information about Council’s services and products, as well as information about the building, the Parramatta Square precinct and beyond.
The City’s historic Town Hall building will be seamlessly integrated into, and accessible from, 5 Parramatta Square. This integration has been carefully considered by the architects to ensure it celebrates and maintains Parramatta’s rich culture and unique heritage.
Targeting a 5-Star Green Star Design rating, 5 Parramatta Square has been designed with sustainability in mind. Features such as high thermal performance, energy-generating solar panels, and water harvesting and re-use systems are all included.
LED lighting, light projections and digital artworks will animate the building’s exterior with various effects and colour.
Parramatta Square is a 3-hectare mixed-use precinct in the centre of Parramatta CBD. Located next to Parramatta train station and a future light rail stop on Macquarie Street, the precinct includes 6,000sqm of public domain that will serve as an important place to meet, trade, shop, dine, learn and connect.
City of Parramatta Council anticipates that 5 Parramatta Square will open in April 2022, to coincide with the completion of the remaining Parramatta Square precinct.
