Director-General Appointed To Lead Youth Justice

The Crisafulli Government has appointed Mr Michael Drane as Director-General of the Department of Youth Justice and Victim Support for a five-year term commencing 10 July 2026.

Mr Drane brings more than two decades of experience in youth justice and human services, having dedicated his career to improving outcomes for young people, victims and the community.

Since January 2026, Mr Drane has served as Acting Director-General, leading the department through a period of significant reform and service delivery. Prior to that, he held the role of Deputy Director-General, Youth Justice Services, and previously served as Senior Executive Director, Youth Detention Operations and Reform, and Executive Director of the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre.

Minister Gerber said Mr Drane’s appointment would provide strong and stable leadership for the department as the Government continued its focus on making Queensland safer, supporting victims and driving reform across the youth justice system.

“Michael has extensive operational and strategic experience, with a deep understanding of Queensland’s youth justice system and the challenges facing it,” Minister Gerber said.

“He has built his career working across frontline services, policy development and system reform, giving him unique insight into the opportunities and challenges within the portfolio.

“Michael has demonstrated strong leadership in delivering complex reforms, strengthening governance and improving service delivery outcomes.

“His appointment ensures continuity of leadership as we continue to deliver on the Crisafulli Government’s unwavering commitment to making Queensland safer, supporting victims of crime and improving outcomes for young people.”
