Man charged with alleged police, frontline worker assault – Newcastle

A man will face court today charged with allegedly assaulting police and frontline workers following a crash at Kotara earlier this week.

About 8.10pm on Wednesday 8 July 2026, police were called to Charlestown Road, Kotara, following reports of a crash.

At the scene, police were told a ute had lost control and crashed into a parked vehicle before crashing through the fence of a home and into a tree.

Several members of the public stopped to assist the driver of the ute; however, were allegedly assaulted by the driver.

An officer and police dog attached to the Dog Unit arrived a short time later and were also allegedly assaulted by the driver.

A 33-year-old man was arrested by police with the assistance of responding firefighters and paramedics.

The man was taken to the John Hunter Hospital for treatment under police guard.

A senior constable was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for lacerations to his face.

About 7.45pm yesterday (Thursday 9 July 2026), police attended the John Hunter Hospital to speak with the man.

He was charged with seven offences,

  • Assault police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm
  • Assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm
  • Hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty
  • Assault frontline emergency worker-no actual bodily harm
  • Drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous
  • Not give particulars to other driver, and
  • Affray.

The man was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 2 today (Friday 10 July 2026).
