What is needed to unlock a strong and diversified economy to deliver secure, quality jobs across a broad range of industries that are less harmful to our environment?
Breakfast by the Bay: Diversifying WA’s Economy Through Sustainable New Markets will feature a panel of industry experts, government representatives and UWA researchers who will discuss the new and sustainable economic ways of the future, and what should be done now to accelerate change.
Presented by The University Club of Western Australia and The UWA Public Policy Institute, the event will be held on June 8, 7am-9am, at The University Club, located on the UWA Campus in Crawley.
Panellists will include Professor Matthew Tonts (Chair of the Environmental Protection Authority), Dr Daniel Schepis (UWA’s Business School) and Associate Professor Sally Thompson (UWA’s School of Engineering).
Dr Caitlin Moore and Professor David Pannell, both from the UWA School of Agriculture and Environment, will also join the panel, moderated by Director of UWA Public Policy Institute Professor Shamit Saggar.
“Economic diversification reduces over-reliance on particular sectors of the economy and is imperative to drive productivity growth and remain competitive in an increasingly globalised environment,” Professor Saggar said.
“Western Australia’s strengths are substantial and need to map onto global megatrends, and this starts with identifying six economic sectors to focus collective efforts to build a more resilient, sustainable and growing economy.
“These are energy, tourism, arts and creative industries, international education, mining and mining engineering and technical services, technology and advanced manufacturing, and primary industries.”
