The Borough of Queenscliffe is reminding residents and visitors that they could be fined for walking a dog without a lead, and is stepping up patrols to catch rule-breakers. The blitz will include increased patrols from Local Laws officers and on-the-spot fines of $165 for dog owners caught doing the wrong thing. Borough of Queenscliffe CEO Martin Gill said he hoped Council wouldn’t have to issue a single fine, and urged residents, visitors and holiday home owners to keep their dogs leashed when walking throughout the Borough.
Keeping your dog leashed protects your dog from fast-moving traffic, prevents damage to sensitive wildlife and avoids unpleasant interactions with people and animals. Council thanks the vast majority of local dog owners who already do the right thing, and reminds others that a new lead for your dog is much cheaper than a fine.
Dogs are required to be leashed in public at all times in the Borough of Queenscliffe, except for when they are being exercised at the Narrows Beach. The Borough of Queenscliffe also restricts dog access on beaches over summer.
