The Cook Labor Government has awarded $2 million in funding to strengthen workforce capacity and create local employment opportunities in regional communities.

The Regional Traineeship Program grants will be shared among 40 successful applicants, with each set to receive $50,000.

The competitive grants scheme is available to WA Community Resource Network members and select regional Local Government Authorities to assist with the cost of employing a trainee.

The recipients were announced today at the 2026 Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development CRC Conference in Perth, which brings together 101 Community Resource Centres from regional and remote communities across the State.

This year’s funding will support traineeships across in fields such as business, tourism, events, local government, and accounting.

As stated by Regional Development Minister Stephen Dawson:

“The Cook Labor Government recognises the importance of this traineeship initiative in creating training and employment opportunities that help people build their careers and stay in their regional communities.

“Over the past eight years, 412 recipients and communities across regional and remote Western Australia have benefited from this support.

“These traineeships provide practical skills and hands-on experience tailored to the workforce needs of local businesses and industries, helping strengthen regional economies for the future.”

As stated by Skills and TAFE Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson:

“Thanks to initiatives like the Cook Labor Government’s Regional Traineeship Program, we are supporting local jobs for local communities.

“Through supporting these local traineeships, we are giving regional employers the resources to grow their workforce.”
