A driver performing a one-man show in his Toyota Camry this morning didn’t find the audience he was looking for when Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol pulled him over.
The man was intercepted at a breath-testing site on Swansea Road about 7.55am when officers observed him using his phone while driving to stream a pop music video.
Enquiries made by police revealed the man was travelling using a learners permit without an experienced person in the car and not displaying the mandatory ‘L’ plates.
The 29-year-old Springvale man was issued with over $1400 in fines for the various traffic offences and had to find a groupie to come and pick him up.
A man also has to surrender his Volkswagen Golf for impoundment after he was detected driving at 177km/h in a 100km/h zone in Rosedale with four passengers, including three children, in the car yesterday afternoon.
Police from Rosedale intercepted the vehicle on the Princes Highway about 3.55pm when it was discovered the man was driving on a learners permit.
The 17-year-old Bentleigh East man is expected to be charged with various speed related offences as well as failing to display ‘L’ plates and will appear in court at a later date.
These intercepts form part of Operation Nexus, a five day high visibility road policing operation over the Easter long weekend.
The state-wide operation will focus on country road users, speed, impaired drivers, seatbelts, on and off road motorcycles, fatigue due to long distance travel and driver distraction through mobile technology and navigation devices.
Priority areas include traffic corridors that link metropolitan areas to popular holiday destinations such as the Grampians, Surf Coast, Great Ocean Road, Greater Shepparton Area, Phillip Island, Bass Coast, South Gippsland, Baw Baw and La Trobe.
Operation Nexus will run from 12.01am on Thursday 18 April to 11.59pm on Monday 22 April 2019.
