Emergency housing deficiencies leave Tasmanians at risk 17 July 2023

The minority Liberal government continues to leave vulnerable Tasmanians at risk, with a lack of adequate emergency housing for those most in need.

Bianca and her young son are facing possible homelessness next month after receiving a notice to vacate their emergency accommodation by mid-August.

Other than the notice to vacate, and despite being on the priority housing waitlist, Bianca has received no other communications from Homes Tasmania and has been left in limbo with no other options available to her.

Both Bianca and her son are dealing with mental health issues, which have now been compounded by the stress and anxiety of facing imminent homelessness.

The Liberal government’s own policy failures and refusal to take meaningful action have left thousands of Tasmanians languishing on the housing waitlist and if they haven’t fixed it in 10 years, they never will.

Tasmanians deserve a government that will prioritise housing and putting a roof over people’s heads.

Labor has a plan to increase the availability of private rental properties including affordable private rentals, as well as continuing to increase supply of government and social housing.

Under our Build to Rent program, Tasmania would see an increase of at least 1,000 additional private rental homes enter the market within the first five years, and stay in the private rental market for thirty years.

This is on top of the 10,000 social and government homes by 2032.

Labor will also provide a short-term solution for hundreds of Tasmanians like Bianca by urgently repairing the 215 government houses that remain untenantable and therefore unused – getting even more houses available sooner.

A State Labor Government would also expand the MyHome scheme and get more people into home ownership, driving the market for more new houses.
