They might be friendly off the field, but Victoria’s police and emergency services will be ditching handcuffs, hoses and defibrillators for goggles, footballs and golf clubs when they compete for sporting glory next month.
More than 3000 participants from 24 agencies state-wide are putting their talents to the test as part of this year’s Victoria Police and Emergency Services Games, which spring into action on 20 March.
Victoria Police Games Federation president and Deputy Commissioner Rick Nugent will today join Ambulance Victoria Chief Executive Officer Tony Walker and Victoria State Emergency Service Chief Officer Operations Tim Wiebusch to officially kick off the Games during an event in Albert Park.
DC Nugent said finding time for family, friends, sport or exercise was something everyone found challenging, but it was particularly important for those in the emergency management sector.
“Victoria, like so many other parts of the country, has had a particularly challenging start to the year and many people have contributed to what has very much been a team response,” DC Nugent said.
“We want that team atmosphere to continue beyond our line of work.
“The Games provide a chance for police officers, firefighters, paramedics and volunteers to break away from the daily grind and pressures faced in the field and engage in some friendly – and hopefully competitive – sports.”
Participants can sign up for a variety of sports ranging from basketball, indoor cricket and AFL to equestrian, paddle racing and water skiing.
New sports this year include the triathlon and IPSC handgun competition.
“There’s something for everyone, so why not join a friend, form a team or encourage others to participate,” DC Nugent said.
“You never know – it might be you or your team hitting the podium to celebrate.”
The 2020 Victoria Police and Emergency Services Games run from 20-29 March at various metropolitan and regional locations state-wide.
