Enhancing the Territory’s Aboriginal cultural experience for visitors

NT Government

The Territory Labor Government is helping local Aboriginal organisations to develop and enhance their Aboriginal cultural tourism experiences, which will grow and diversify our tourism sector.

Six organisations have been awarded a share of $500,000 in funding from Round 5 of the Aboriginal Tourism Grant Program.

The projects will deliver new bookable Aboriginal cultural tourism products, grow the range of visitor experiences available and encourage people not only to travel to the Territory, but to stay longer.

Of the successful applications, three were in the Top End and three from the Central Australia region.

Among the Top End recipients, Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation was awarded funding to support their Strategic Cultural Tourism Plan and delivery of a collection of Aboriginal cultural tourism products and experiences.

While in Central Australia, 100% Finke River Culture and Adventure was awarded funding for upgrades to the Rodna campground facilities, including new toilets, showers, kitchen, solar lighting, a rainwater tank and new shelters.

The Northern Territory Aboriginal Tourism Strategy 2020-2030 sets out to develop a sustainable Aboriginal tourism sector that leads the nation.

With grants ranging from $30,000 to $100,000, Round Five of the Aboriginal Tourism Grants supports the development of quality experiences, products and services.

The Northern Territory Government has supported more than 50 Aboriginal tourism projects across the Territory through Aboriginal Tourism Grant Program, with a total investment of more than $1.7 million dollars in grant funding.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Tourism and Hospitality, Nicole Manison:

“Nowhere else in Australia lets you connect with Aboriginal culture like the Territory, and we want to support our local businesses to showcase their authenticity in the delivery of new and diverse Aboriginal cultural experiences.

Our Northern Territory Aboriginal Tourism Strategy 2020-2030 sets the goal to become Australia’s undeniable leader in the Aboriginal tourism sector by 2030.

Growing Aboriginal tourism offerings empowers Aboriginal Territorians, by assisting in the preservation of culture and offering a future of well paying jobs across the entire Northern Territory.”
