Work crews have completed the final stage of road works to reduce congestion and improve safety on Ingham Road.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said the latest project will improve traffic flow at the intersection of Ingham Road and Enterprise Street.
“This is the final piece of a puzzle that was first discussed in 2016 – this is the third Ingham Road intersection Council has upgraded to make the road safer and less congested,” Cr Hill said.
“More than 13,000 vehicles use Ingham Road every day and these works will make it a smoother journey.
“The safety improvements include a new service lane opposite the intersection, upgraded entry gates at some businesses and space for cyclists.”
The first stage of works built a new roundabout at Weston and Everett Streets in 2017 and stage two improved the intersection of Ingham Road and Webb Drive last year.
Cr Hill said the works will help businesses across the city.
“Around 2,000 vehicles travel through this intersection towards the CBD in peak hours, so this will be welcomed by business owners,” Cr Hill said.
“About 30 per cent of the traffic on Ingham Road is commercial vehicles – that’s double the figure we have on other roads.”
Local Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said all levels of government have contributed to the project.
“The Enterprise Street works will improve Ingham Road and we have to thank the State and Federal Governments for providing funding,” Cr Greaney said.
“The Federal Government provided half the funding for this project and the State and Council both contributed 25%.
“Council also thanks BMD who have constructed this project on time and budget.
“Ingham Road is a key link to the Bohle industrial area so it has to handle 25 metre B-double trucks – these trucks also use Enterprise Street so it’s an important intersection.”
