Plans to remember sacrifice in wartime, changes to parking in Lords Place and funding support for a summit of school captains were all on the agenda of last night’s Orange City Council meeting.
Extra street banners in lead-up to Anzac Day
Orange City Council will display banners along Summer Street in the weeks leading up to Anzac Day next year to remember the sacrifice of local men and women who died while serving in the armed forces during wartime.
Last night’s meeting took the decision following a motion from Cr Kevin Duffy.
A background report to the meeting from Cr Duffy said : “I have spoken to a number of Families who have lost loved ones in Service from Orange and surrounds, and they are quite enthusiastic about the idea. I have also had brief discussions with the RSL and the Orange Historical Society. It is also a personal touch of recognition from our community.”
The meeting heard the banners would cost around $4600 to produce. There would also be research with local families and the Orange Historical Society to compile the list of local identities for banners.
The meeting also decided to present a smaller banner to a family member of each of those mentioned on the banners.
During the open forum at the start of the meeting, RSL sub-branch president Mr Chris Colivn said the War Memorial Hall had records of around 270 local people who had died in wartime.
The meeting heard due to the number of banner poles, it may take a number of years to acknowledge all those who gave their lives in wartime.
Parking changes for Lords Place
Last night’s meeting decided to make changes to timed parking in Lords Place between Summer and Kite Streets.
Council decided to amend the existing 15 min parallel parking spaces to become 30 min parking spaces and the existing 30 min angled -parking spaces to become 1 hour parking spaces. The changes have followed recent measurement of the number of vacant parking spaces and feed-back from businesses in Lords Place.
Conference reports
The meeting acknowledged reports about several recent conferences attended by Councillors including:
- The Australia Local Government Women’s Conference held in Victoria in May.
- The Local Government NSW Water Management Conference held in Parkes in June.
- The Local Government NSW Destination and Visitor Economy Conference held at Manly in May.
Last night’s meeting chose Councillors to attend conferences including:
- the 2023 National Local Roads, Transport and Infrastructure Congress in September in Canberra. The meeting selected Cr Evans and Cr Duffy to attend.
- The Cities Power Partnership Climate Summit for Local Government in September in Melbourne. The meeting selected Cr Mallard to attend.
School leaders’ summit gains support
Last night’s meeting decided to donate $1500 to the Young Leaders of the Central West Summit to cover catering and other costs for the annual event being held in Orange on 24 July, 2023. The summit provides a forum for student leadership teams from local high schools to connect and collaborate annually on a range of ideas and issues.
