Ferguson’s failure to launch

Tasmanian Labor
  • Government failing to deliver on infrastructure
  • Delays increase traffic woes
  • Commuters and tourists will be waiting at least another two years for delivery of long-awaited upgrades to roads next to Hobart Airport.

“Will Hodgman and Michael Ferguson are already more than a year behind their own stated schedule for the Hobart Airport Interchange, but it’s been revealed today that the project timeframe has blown out further,” said Shadow Infrastructure Minister Shane Broad.

“When it was first announced, the project was scheduled to go to tender in mid-2018, have work start in late 2018, and be complete by late 2020.

“It’s a commitment Government took to the last election, but Michael Ferguson hasn’t been able to deliver on that commitment and this latest revelation is more evidence of the Liberals’ faltering infrastructure agenda.

“While Government is keen to talk about how important the airport road upgrades will be for both tourism and improved traffic flow, Mr Ferguson fails to acknowledge that none of this will be delivered until the middle of 2022 at earliest.

“It’s just the latest in a growing list of delayed projects, including an underground bus mall in Hobart, the redevelopment of the Royal Hobart Hospital and the new TT-Line vessels.

“It is clear the Government can’t manage the large infrastructure projects that are so crucial to state growth, job creation and provision of services.”
