Development of the first Western Australian Seniors Strategy has reached an important milestone, with the key elements of the consultation draft now available for final feedback.
The strategy will provide a cohesive single vision to support and promote seniors, encourage community action, and drive government change.
A broad range of stakeholders have already given input on the strategy
More than 2,300 people across Western Australia were part of the process through online and postcard surveys, focus groups (metropolitan and regional), and phone interviews.
Written submissions were received from peak bodies and community organisations, as well as local government authorities.
Dedicated sessions were also held with regional Aboriginal communities, as well as with experts and leaders who have worked closely with seniors.
The draft strategy is centred on four ‘pillars’:
- thriving physically and mentally;
- safe and friendly communities;
- staying connected and engaged; and
- having a voice that is heard.
These pillars are supported by a number of ‘key focus areas’ which look at specific aspects of support for older people in WA.
The final consultation process will see the vision, draft pillars and focus areas tested. Online comments can also be made at the Department of Communities’ website. Public comment will close on 16 December 2022.
The final strategy is expected to be released in early 2023.

“Our population is ageing, and it is more important than ever to ensure our community recognises and values our seniors for the contribution they have made – and continue to make – to our society.
“The Western Australian Seniors Strategy is a commitment to the 428,000 seniors who make up a vital part of the Western Australian community.
“It provides an opportunity to focus our efforts over the next 10 years to support older Western Australians to live their best lives.”
