Losing someone you love is one of life’s most difficult experiences. In the midst of grief, you may find comfort in doing something to remember and honour their life. Whether it’s a quiet reflection or a shared moment with others, creating a tribute to their life can offer healing and connection.

Here are five unique and thoughtful ways to remember a loved one after their passing:

Create a memory box

A memory box is a personal and heartfelt way to both reflect on a person’s life and to hold their keepsakes together in a special place. Fill it with photos, letters, small keepsakes, or meaningful items, such as medals, jewellery or handwritten notes. You might also include journal entries, quotes or messages you wish you could share with them. Over time, this box can become a cherished reminder of your bond and a place to return to for reflection.

Hold a celebration of their life

In addition to, or instead of a traditional funeral, a celebration of life can be a thoughtful way to honour your loved one. This can take many forms: a casual gathering at home, a picnic in their favourite park or a dinner with close friends and family. Share their favourite foods, play the music they loved, tell stories, or simply spend time together in their memory. It’s a chance to celebrate the joy they brought to your life.

Plant a tree or garden

Creating a lively tribute can be a powerful symbol of ongoing life and love. Plant a tree in their name, or a start of a small garden with flowers they enjoyed. Each season of growth offers moments to reflect and feel connected.

Create a tradition

Start a tradition on their birthday or anniversary, such as lighting a candle, sharing a meal they loved, playing their favourite music, or taking a walk in a place they enjoyed. Simple rituals like these can bring comfort and a way of bringing friends and family together to remember.

Donate in their memory

Donating in memory of a loved one is a meaningful way to remember them and to help future generations. You may choose to support a cause they believed in, or one that supported them towards the end of their life.

Our In Memory program is one way you can celebrate a loved one’s life while supporting vital cancer research, prevention and support services. It’s a meaningful tribute that can make a difference for others facing cancer, now and in the future. If someone you know has lost a loved one, you can also make a donation in their memory instead of giving flowers.

Support for grieving

If you’re struggling with the loss of a loved one, consider speaking with your GP, or a counsellor. There are free online telephone support services you can call, such as Griefline on 1300 845 745, which provides support for anyone who is grieving. You can also call our 13 11 20 Cancer Information and Support Line if you would like to speak with one of our nurses.
