  • A McGowan Government-funded food literacy and nutrition education program for people living with a disability is delivering great results.

The Healthy Food For All Abilities program, delivered by Foodbank WA, has been designed to help people with disability build valuable life skills and assist people living with a disability to transition towards independent living.

The program is being funded through the State Government’s ‘A Western Australia for Everyone: State Disability Strategy 2020-2030’ Innovation Fund.

The first round of funding saw nearly $2.5 million extended to seven organisations to improve the economic and social wellbeing of people with disability in WA.

Almost 100 people with disability and their support workers have attended the program so far, with Disability Services Minister Don Punch today joining participants from Down Syndrome WA at Foodbank WA’s Centre for Hunger Relief, for a session of the Healthy Food For All Abilities program.

The Healthy Food For All Abilities program builds confidence around food knowledge, food choices and practical food preparation.

Programs are being hosted at Foodbank WA, which houses a world-class purpose-built kitchen that is wheelchair accessible, and are also being planned for regional centres.

As stated by Disability Services Minister Don Punch:

“The Innovation Fund was established to stimulate innovative ways to enhance independence and quality of life for people with disability, and the Healthy Food For All Abilities program is a great example of that.

“Foodbank WA devised the program to ensure people with disability and their families have the opportunity to learn about nutrition and how to plan, select and cook healthy meals.

“I am delighted to see that the Innovation Fund is building the capacity of people with disability, their families and their community through unique programs such as this one.”
