Footy fun day supports communities in need

Nic Street, Minister for Sport and Recreation

Sport fans are encouraged to pack Sandy Bay’s Queenborough Oval today for the eighth annual Reclink Community Cup Hobart.

The charity Aussie Rules clash between an eclectic bunch of musicians and local media personalities is the major fundraising event for Reclink – a not-for-profit organisation that runs sport and recreation programs for disadvantaged communities.

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Nic Street, said the annual match was a popular family event for a great cause.

“Reclink works with about 80 organisations across Tasmania to support the people in our community who need it most to access sport and other social activities,” he said.

“Through specialised programs, people who are living with disability, mental illness, homelessness, addiction, social and economic hardship can participate in activities that support their wellbeing and bring a host of other benefits.

“The Rockliff Liberal Government is a supporter of the work that Reclink does to enrich the lives of Tasmanians and we’ve committed $500,000 towards the organisation to support them for the next three years.

“Their programs align with our commitment to make sport and active recreation accessible and inclusive for all and to get more Tasmanians active.

“Last year’s Community Cup raised $16,000 for Reclink and I hope our community will turn out in force to eclipse that total this weekend.”

The Van Diemen Dogs (musicians) will play the Ramonas (media) at Upper Queenborough Oval from 1pm today.
