Fraser Coast sets course for tourism growth with boat ramp upgrade

Fraser Coast tourism will be boosted by a $1.59 million project, funded through Round 4 of the Palaszczuk Government’s successful $295 million Building our Regions (BoR) program, that will improve access to World Heritage-listed Fraser Island.

The popular River Heads boat ramp and car park, south of Hervey Bay, is set to be upgraded, funded with $497,000 from BoR and $1.09 million from Fraser Coast Regional Council.

Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick said more than five local jobs will be supported during the construction period.

“The improvements will make the boat ramp safer and help protect against erosion,” Mr Dick said.

“Maintaining this facility is crucial for tourism in the region as it provides access for the ferry and barge services to Fraser Island, and is also used by recreational boaties.

“As part of this project the existing carpark will be extended, and a new carpark will also be added, providing an additional 57 car-only spaces.

“Fraser Coast is one of Queensland’s most beautiful regions and we want to ensure more people can experience what this incredible part of our state has to offer.”

Fraser Coast Regional Council Mayor George Seymour said the River Heads boat ramp was an important tourism asset for the region.

“The improvements to the River Heads boat ramp and carpark will help support our region’s tourism growth and is an important step in ensuring we are prepared for additional visitors,” Mr Seymour said.

“Building our Regions funding will assist us to make sure we continue to have excellent community facilities for locals and visitors, with flow-on effects for our sustained economic growth.”

Round 4 of Building our Regions will see the Palaszczuk Government partner with 37 councils on 49 projects – work which will create an estimated 657 jobs.

Under previous rounds, the program has allocated $225 million to 174 critical infrastructure projects across the state, generating 1762 jobs and attracting additional investment of $353.5 million from councils and other organisations.
