STRAUSS Suite from Der Rosenkavalier, TrV 227, Op.59 In Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s final concert for the 2021 season, conductor Umberto Clerici will lead the Orchestra in a concert that spans three composers, countries, and styles. First, a trip to the Italian opera hall for The Thieving Magpie Overture by Rossini, made famous in the film A Clockwork Orange, and a great curtain raiser in every sense of the word. Also on the opera theme, the full Orchestra will perform the orchestral suite from Richard Strauss’ legendary opera Der Rosenkavalier (The Knight of the Rose). Finally, the concert showcases the originally planned La mer (The Sea), one of Debussy’s great masterpieces. With Maestro Clerici at the podium and one of the biggest assembly of musicians on stage this year, this will go down as an exhilarating night music-making at the highest level. Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s much loved family Christmas concerts are back, and this year will be full of cheeky mischief, much merriment, and of course, marvellous music. Written, composed, and arranged by the Orchestra’s Craig Allister Young, Symphonic Santa tells the story of Sneezy the Reindeer and Izzy the Elf, who help Santa and Mrs Claus get ready for Christmas. A special treat for ears young and old alike will be new works from Young and Brisbane-based, award-winning songwriter Donna Dyson, including Sneezy the Reindeer, Santa Boogie Woogie, Santa’s Christmas Cake and I Won’t Believe it’s Christmas. Also joining the musical line-up are festive favourites like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Jingle Bells, Silent Night and Trepak from The Nutcracker.

THE NUTCRACKER, Presented by Queensland Ballet

Be captivated by an enchanting Christmas Eve story, featuring a dance by the Sugar Plum fairy and a Waltz of the Flowers in the Land of the Sweets. Share the festive tradition with family and friends as Queensland Ballet brings the lovable characters of The Nutcracker to life. The story has all the wondrous elements: a buoyant family party, a Christmas tree glittering with ornaments and a surprise magician with presents. As you enter the dream of a young girl, be enchanted by a world of dance featuring mice, toys and lollies that create magic for every imagination. This classical ballet was first performed in Russia in 1892 and has become a cherished Christmas tradition the world over. Queensland Ballet’s production was choreographed by Ben Stevenson OBE in 1976 and premiered for Brisbane audiences in 2013.
