Future Mobility Living Lab Launch

The City of Casey is excited to announce the launch of the Future Mobility Living Lab (FMLL), a new program aimed at making our community safer and more eco-friendly.

Developed by Council’s Smart City, Innovation, and Improvement team, FMLL is a groundbreaking initiative designed to bring innovative ideas to life to redefine urban mobility. It emphasises safety, sustainability, and community engagement.

The program will trial smart mobility technologies that will enable data-driven insights into safety on the road and around schools. There will also be a focus on reducing waste and emissions, and building streets and transport infrastructure with a lower environmental impact.

One of the issues Council is looking to address through the FMLL is the concern of parents and caregivers regarding children’s safety during their trips to and from Narre Warren South P-12 College, and during busy pick-up and drop-off times.

By installing sensors, data will be collected and analysed by Federation University and Swinburne University research teams. Their subsequent recommendations will help inform the school and Council’s future decisions and ultimately support the creation of an environment where families feel secure as local school zones become safer.

The commitment of FMLL will see a collaboration with leading research organisation NTRO. This non-profit organisation is at the forefront of researching materials that challenge conventional norms in construction and urban development by incorporating recycled waste that would otherwise end in landfill.

City of Casey Chair of Administrators Noelene Duff PSM said that this project aligns with Council’s commitment to creating a city that not only protects its residents, but also nurtures a sustainable and vibrant environment.

“The Future Mobility Living Lab will take great strides towards creating a space where everyone can feel secure and our city can thrive sustainably as we shape the future of mobility in Casey,” Ms Duff said.

“Through Living Lab projects, Council can test and implement new ideas and technologies, developed with the active participation of the community, with the intent to deliver better outcomes for our community.”
