A groundbreaking program being run at the Roebourne PCYC aims to provide a safe space for at-risk young people, while building self-confidence and reinforcing positive life skills.
Police Minister Michelle Roberts today announced a $241,560 Lotterywest grant to fund two part-time sports co-ordinators at the Roebourne PCYC.
They will deliver a variety of sports programs, team building exercises and other activities to about 65 participants each session.
Known as ‘Safe Space Weekend’, the initiative is targeted towards at-risk young people between the ages of eight to 15 from the communities of Roebourne, Cheeditha, 5 Mile and surrounds.
Transport and meals are also provided.
Mrs Roberts today visited Roebourne where she met with police and community leaders, and witnessed first-hand some of the valuable work being done by the PCYC.
As stated by Police Minister Michelle Roberts:
“The State Government is committed to making Roebourne a safer community for children.
“Programs such as these are a great way to engage young people in a positive way.
“They provide at-risk young people with opportunities for sport, music and other programs aimed at reinforcing positive life skills.
“It’s easy to see why Roebourne PCYC was awarded the best regional PCYC in 2018.
“It’s a fantastic facility, where local police do an outstanding job working with a number of different groups in the West Pilbara to give our young people the best chances in life.”
