Gun and hunting knife seized, two men charged with traffic and firearm offences at Broken Hill, NSW

Two men will appear in court today charged after a firearm and knife were seized from a vehicle following a pursuit in the state’s far west.

About 10.15pm yesterday (Thursday 19 March 2020), police will allege a Suzuki Vitara SUV was driving erratically on Bourke Street, Broken Hill.

Officers from Barrier Police District’s Target Action Group attempted to pull over the vehicle; however, the SUV allegedly failed to stop.

A police pursuit was initiated but was terminated a short time later due to safety concerns.

Shortly after, police located the vehicle bogged on the side of the Barrier Highway. The passenger, a 33-year-old man, was arrested at the scene.

Following a short foot pursuit, officers arrested the driver, a 29-year-old man.

Both men were taken to Broken Hill Police Station.

Upon a search of the vehicle, police located a rifle, ammunition, hunting knife and drug paraphernalia. These items were seized to undergo forensic examination.

The 29-year-old man was charged with police pursuit – not stop – drive at speed, drive while licence cancelled, possess shortened firearm, possess unregistered firearm, not keep firearm safely, possess ammunition, acquire prohibited firearm, acquire ammunition, enter enclosed land and custody of knife in public place.

The 33-year-old man was charged with possess shortened firearm, possess unregistered firearm and not keep firearm safely.

Both men were refused bail to appear before Broken Hill Local Court today (Friday 20 March 2020).
