Hampton commuter car park to proceed

Council has given the green light to a multi-deck commuter car park in Service St, Hampton.

The car park will have two-levels of long-stay commuter parking below ground, while retaining ground level short-stay public parking.

Bayside Mayor Cr Alex del Porto said Council has long advocated to the State and Federal Governments for additional commuter car parking across Bayside.

“Council is committed to encouraging sustainable transport including greater use of public transport along the Sandringham railway line,” Cr del Porto said. “The expanded commuter car park will help to facilitate public transport use and reduce congestion.”

The project will deliver a minimum of 133 car parking spaces across the three levels -50 spaces on Level B2, 40 on Level B1 and 43 at street level.

The total cost of the project – expected to be about $11.3 million – will be funded through the Federal Government Urban Congestion Fund.

The design of the new car park seeks to minimise the loss of existing large canopy of trees, with the majority of large gums on the boundary being retained.

There will inevitably be some removal of vegetation at the site in order to facilitate a basement car park. However, extensive new planting is proposed with a combination of planter trees, a range of native and indigenous small and medium canopy trees as well as shrub planting.

Parking in Hampton is set to be particularly tight in coming years due to upcoming construction works by the Victorian Government and Council’s Community Hub and open space project.
