Hapless Broad goes rogue in tired election beat-up

Dean Young, Liberal Member for Franklin

Shadow Treasurer Shane Broad could not help himself today in Parliament, still desperately trying to beat up talk of an early election.

This is despite the unequivocal message previously from the business community, like the CEO of the Tasmanian Small Business Council, Robert Mallett who said:

“An election is the last thing Tasmania needs right now.” (Robert Mallett, 2/10/23)

Two weeks later, and the so-called alternative Treasurer – who cannot delivered a properly-costed alternative Budget – is still using Parliament to keep trotting out his scare campaign.

The only problem is, every time he says it, it makes business people nervous and cuts into confidence and certainty – and it makes a mockery of his Leader’s calls for “stability and certainty” only a week ago:

“These businesses can’t have confidence and certainty in the future when they don’t have confidence and certainty in the stability of government.” (Rebecca White, 8/10/23)

As the business community has repeatedly made crystal clear: stop the talk of an early election. It damages business confidence and undermines certainty and stability.

It is now only the Labor Party that continues to speculate about an early election – and only some of them.

At least former Labor leader David O’Byrne gets it, saying earlier today on radio that he understood people don’t want elections and chaos, and that he must act in a responsible way.

It’s a shame that his former colleague Dr Broad can’t work that out and cease the tired election beat-up rhetoric.
