To help improve the air quality in Yarra, we’re encouraging residents to use healthier, more sustainable ways to heat their homes and reduce air pollution caused by traditional wood-burning heaters.
Smoke from wood heaters and fireplaces can release polluting air emissions, contributing to climate change and increasing health risks, according to Victoria’s Environment Protection Authority (EPA).
Electric heating, such as reverse cycle air conditioning, is a healthier and more sustainable alternative to heat your home with a number of Victorian Government incentives available to help Yarra residents make the switch. These incentives include $1,000 rebates for low-income households that upgrade to reverse cycling systems, discounts on energy efficient products and appliances and solar panel rebates of up to $1,400 and no-interest loans.
If you are using a wood heater, there are also several steps you can take to reduce air pollutants and ensure your fire burns as efficiently as possible. Examples include using dry, untreated, seasoned hardwood for fuel and making sure the heater’s flue is clean.
