The McGowan Government has today announced that Hocking Heritage and Architecture has been engaged as lead consultants on the Ascot Kilns Conservation project.
The highly complex project will see the heritage listed kilns and imposing chimney stacks undergo assessment, planning and design ahead of the specialised conservation works, which are anticipated to begin in 2022.
This initiative signals the beginning of what is hoped will be a revival for the historic site, and is expected to generate a pipeline of economic activity including local jobs and subcontracting opportunities across the life of the project.
Local firm Hocking Heritage and Architecture was selected following a competitive tender process and will bring their considerable heritage expertise to assist the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage in delivering this significant undertaking.
The much-loved Ascot Kilns site is recognised for hosting Australia’s largest collection of rare ‘beehive’ kilns, and, as home to the former Bristile tile factory, played a key role in Perth’s mid-century suburban boom.
The Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage is also considering options for the future of the ‘Brick Man’ statue, which has captured the imagination of the local community.
As stated by Heritage Minister David Templeman:
“The appointment of suitably qualified heritage architects as lead consultants represents an important milestone in the journey to revive one of Perth’s rarest, most prized heritage places.
“Recognised for its cultural heritage significance, the Ascot Kilns offer a unique insight into 20th century industrial manufacturing. The imposing chimneys are a familiar, integral part of the local skyline, and it is reassuring to now have the certainty that these shall remain so for many years to come.
“We also admire the effort invested in the Brick Man statue that pays homage to the site’s history and continues to interpret the heritage of this place in new and engaging ways.”
As stated by Planning Minister Rita Saffioti:
“I’m pleased to see this initiative take a major step forward, with the engagement of an experienced local heritage consulting team.
“The funding we have committed to this project – through the McGowan Government’s $5.5 billion WA Recovery Plan – will generate considerable local employment and contracting opportunities.
“The project will ultimately ensure that the heritage assets are protected and enable longer term planning that respects the site’s heritage values while reinvigorating the entire precinct.”
