The Andrews Labor Government is backing local ideas to improve community safety and reduce crime in Shepparton, as part of a major crime prevention funding boost.
The Labor Government has provided $500,000 to eight local programs through the Empowering Communities grants program, supporting innovative, community-led initiatives that identify and address local crime and safety issues.
These organisations provide mental health training, arts programs, youth diversion programs, youth employment opportunities and tailored programs for women and families.
The eight successful recipients include:
- Family Haven’s Greater Shepparton Lighthouse
- Masomo Mbele Foundation, the Echo Hope: Empowering the Voices of Young Refugees project
- Goulburn Valley Gangaru Parasports, Breaking down Barrier’s project
- Giz a Break Limited
- International Association for Psychiatric Nurses
- Mooroopna Education and Activity Centre’s Art Mural project
- Umoja Empowerment Group
- The Secure Shepp Kids Project
The Empowering Communities grants are part of the Labor Government’s Building Safer Communities Program helping local communities bring projects to life that improve safety and address crime in their area.
The Empowering Communities initiative has provided funding to partnerships established in Brimbank, Hume, Melton, Knox, Casey, Greater Dandenong, Ballarat, Greater Shepparton and Wyndham.
Since 2015, the Government has invested more than $100 million to support more than 940 community crime prevention initiatives across Victoria.
