Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Sam Hearn congratulated Crittenden Estate winery for being named overall platinum winner of the 2020 Botanical Research Institute of Texas / International Federation of Wines and Spirits International Sustainable Winegrowing Competition.
This prestigious American based competition assesses wineries from all over the world for their sustainability programs and wine quality.
The past decade has seen Crittenden Estate embrace new ways of caring for their soil, including the abandonment of all chemicals in favour of an innovative program of inter row cropping of peas and oats, as well as undertaking a 12-month composting regime that has led to significant improvements in soil health.
Other recent projects include:
- the introduction of bees for the pollination of desirable fruiting trees
- reducing greenhouse emissions and energy costs by 60 per cent with the installation of solar panels
- water reclamation reuse through the property’s water treatment plant.
